Battery Powered Cordless Lawnmowers
For the convenience of an electric lawnmower without the power cored, battery powered cordless lawnmowers provide a decent alternative for the majority of smaller lawns up to 250-300 m2. For longer grass and larger lawns, you will be better off with either a petrol lawnmower or a corded electric lawnmower.
There are two types of cordless lawnmower, rotary and cylinder. Rotary lawnmowers are better all rounders whilst cylinders lawnmowers will produce a better finish on well maintained lawns that are free from bumps and dips.
Choosing a Cordless Lawnmower
Apart from the size of your lawn, the most important consideration when buying a cordless lawnmower is the battery type. Up until fairly recently, cordless mowers were exclusively powered by lead acid batteries (similar to a small car battery). Recent advances in battery technology (and reduced manufacturing costs) have seen the introduction of lithium batteries as a better alternative.
Lead acid batteries have two distinct disadvantages compared to lithium batteries - weight and charge time. Lead acid batteries used in cordless lawnmowers can take anything between 8 and 20 hours to charge, and they need to be fully charged before use. Lithium batteries on the other hand can be fully charged in around 1 hour or topped up with a short half-hour charge. In terms of weight, Lithium batteries are lighter than lead acid which means you are pushing less weight around the lawn.
There are currently two lithium battery powered lawnmower options. The cordless Bosch Rotak rotary lawnmowers offer a choice of cutting widths for various lawn sizes, whilst the Brill RazorCut Accu 38 is a lithium battery powered cylinder lawnmower for small lawns.
