Petrol Cylinder Lawnmowers
Petrol Cylinder Lawnmowers
For the smartest garden, a cylinder lawnmower will provide a high quality finish on all well maintained lawns. Available in both petrol and electric versions, cylinder mowers draw upon the traditional lawnmower design of two blades coming together and cleanly slicing through grass stems. Apart from a very small number of manual and electric cylinder lawnmowers, all machines in this category will feature a roller for a smart striped finish on your lawn.
Bear in mind that a cylinder lawnmower is for use on well maintained lawns that are free from bumps and dips. These machines will not turn a rough area of grass into a bowling green! Bumpy, uneven lawns are best tackled with a four wheeled petrol rotary lawnmower which will provide smoother operation due to the lack of a rear roller. Using a lawnmower fitted with a roller on bumpy ground will cause the machine to jump around making controlled mowing difficult.

Blade Cassettes
The more blades on the cassette (cylinder) the finer the cut produced. A standard domestic cylinder lawnmower will have 3-6 blades mounted on the cassette. For maintaining greens, tennis courts and very high quality ornamental lawns, a 10-12 blade cassette will make more cuts per inch and produce the finest finish.
Cylinder & Rotary Lawnmower Differences
Rotary lawnmowers cut using a flat blade housed within the deck. As the blade turns, it slashes and hacks its way through the grass stems. In contrast, a cylinder lawnmower uses two different types of blade. The cylinder (or cassette) is fitted with a number of blades that rotate and come into contact with a fixed bed knife. This arrangement slices neatly through the grass in a scissor action producing a clean cut.
Unlike petrol rotary lawnmowers which will have a grass collection box fitted to the rear of the machine, most cylinder lawn mowers throw the clippings into a front mounted collection box.
Cylinder Scarifying Cassettes
Some cylinder lawnmowers offer the option of replacing the cutting blade cassette with a scarifying cassette for the removal of thatch from your lawn during autumn. Removal of thatch encourages new growth and is a vital part of lawn maintenance.
Cylinder Lawnmowers & Ribbing
Ribbing is the name given to a series of parallel strips of alternating shorter and longer grass caused by a cylinder lawnmower being used at low revs. When the engines revs are too low, the cylinder blades will produce fewer cuts over a given distance. This is more of a problem on lawnmowers with cassettes that contain fewer blades or when cutting longer grass. To avoid ribbing, always use always cylinder mower at the correct revs and increase the cutting height on longer grass.
Other types of Cylinder Lawn Mower
For smaller lawns, the extra power and cutting widths offered by a petrol cylinder mower might not be needed. The selection of environmentally friendly manual cylinder lawnmowers are capable of producing excellent results with the added benefit of zero running costs. If you don’t fancy the work involved in using a manual hand mower, have a look at the selection of electric cylinder lawnmowers
